Title: How to Lose a Popularity Contest
MPA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Stephen S. Campanelli
Starring: Sara Waisglass, Chase Hudson, Lillian Doucet-Roche
Runtime: 1 hr 42 mins
What It Is: Ellie Pearse (Waisglass) has always been a bit of a perfectionist—the perfect student and, frankly, a bit of a tight-ass. Nate (Hudson) is the big man on campus, but he’s never exactly been an academic standout. Both Ellie and Nate have just been dumped by their long-time partners, which leads Ellie to try and foil her longtime ex, Rowan (Graham Verchere), in a run for student body president. There’s only one huge problem… she’s already signed Nate up as a candidate before even telling him. Now these two classmates, who’ve never really vibed, are going to have to get along and figure it all out.
What We Think: Listen. This is a Tubi film, so only so much of it is ever going to be truly tolerable. Sara Waisglass is incessantly annoying as Ellie. That isn’t really her fault, because the writing is bottom-of-the-barrel. Chase Hudson plays up every stereotype you can think of, and it’s all to the detriment of his character. The entire journey here is kind of boring. You have to take all of this with a grain of salt given what it is, but I also know they’re capable of better. Worth the Wait, for example, does this kind of thing far more successfully. Normally I’d grade on a curve, but even when matched against similar projects, this is a listless mess.
Our Grade: D+, It took a lot of rethinking to land on this grade. Was I going to be honest, or view it through slightly rose-tinted glasses? Sadly, I took the glasses off for this one—and I took the gloves off too. Don’t see this. The cheese with which it presents itself is simply too much to handle. There are far better options in the romantic comedy genre, especially nowadays.
