Title: The Rip
MPA Rating: R
Director: Joe Carnahan
Starring: Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Sasha Calle
Runtime: 1 hr 53 mins
What It Is: Lt. Dane Dumars (Damon) and his band of Miami PD officers are reeling. Following the death of their captain, Jackie Velez (Lina Esco), they are now being investigated for their possible role in it. Det. Sergeant J.D. Byrne (Affleck), alongside the rest of his crew, gets a tip about a potential “rip” totaling $150,000. For those unfamiliar, a rip involves hitting a drug house believed to contain dirty money. What the crew finds is a much, much bigger deal than originally thought—so much so that an unknown threat is determined to end them.
What We Think: A crime thriller with some interesting twists and turns. Sadly, alongside those twists and turns are some problematic and obvious plot holes. Joe Carnahan does not give an actual fuck about any of that, though. What he does care about is straightforward crime-thriller chaos: police officers going pew pew. I liked a lot of the acting, even through the silliness of the plot. Carnahan has always been a bit edgy, similar to David Ayer in a way. I liked Copshop, The Grey, and Stretch. This is certainly the type of film that will find its audience, and many of them won’t care about the script’s logical gaps. Instead, they’ll enjoy the directions it takes. For me, it mostly worked once I made the decision to turn my brain off.
Our Grade: C+, Ridiculous, and it works. This is definitely the kind of crime thriller you’d see on Netflix, and for better or worse, that’s a valid thing in 2026. It’s exactly the sort of movie audiences are looking for. It doesn’t make for the strongest cinematic experience, but you aren’t here for the art with something like this. Sit back and enjoy the utter silliness of this violent, dumb piece of crime fodder.
