Title: Faces of Death
MPA Rating: R
Director: Donald Goldhaber
Starring: Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, Josie Totah
Runtime: 1 hr 37 mins

What It Is: Margot Romero (Ferreira) works in content review at a major social media company. She’s seen some of the worst things the world has to offer. When she stumbles onto a video that seems too real she begins to question both what we allow on the internet and the nature of this video’s creation. When it’s discovered it appears to be a dedication to a 1978 splatter film of the same name. What Margot doesn’t know is that what she’s seeing is very real.

What We Think: It’s sufficient. Barbie Ferreira is so dope that she herself carries the entirety of this splatter film. Dacre Montgomery is not very believable in his role given who he is and what he looks like. The gore and violence looks great but comes off funnier than it does frightening. Structurally the script doesn’t feel or work very well. Something like this works best when it is fun and leans into the right elements. This doesn’t do that. It sort of plays it a bit too straight to work well enough. Donald Goldhaber’s two previous works How to Blow Up a Pipeline and Cam were both really solid. Goldhaber is such a talented filmmaker but this didn’t capitalize on that enough.

Our Grade: C+, Shout out to my boy Gavin Brivik for really bringing it with the music and score here. That element really hit, as it always does with Gavin. Goldhaber will be back and likely with something that’s much more interesting. Barbie Ferreira has a much better performance and film coming up that we’ll be talking about. Nonetheless, love her, wanna see more of her. As for this it is a big skip for me. Horror fans will find enough to like here.
