Title: You, Me and Tuscany
MPA Rating: PG-13
Director: Kat Coiro
Starring: Halle Bailey, Renee Jean-Page, Lorenzo de Moor
Runtime: 1 hr 45 mins
What It Is: Anna (Bailey) lives her life day by day with no real major plans. When she meets Matteo (de Moor) he accelerates her desire to visit his home country of Italy. He tells her stories of growing up there, its beauty, and she can’t help but want to pick it all up and go. When she does exactly that, a series of misunderstandings lead her to telling a few lies. As those lies stack she’s forced to face not only those consequences but feelings that may or may not be developing.
What We Think: There was so much hope for this! It just didn’t work. I’m unsure about Jean-Page as an actor. Halle Bailey is completely carrying this thing. Her charisma works so completely that whatever she’s doing totally has you gripped. She’s funny and highly likable. The thing about this is for a romantic comedy both leads sort of have to be interesting. Jean-Page’s Michael is by no means, in any way, interesting. There was a lot that could’ve been done here. They had the location, they had the star but this lacked the execution. Director Kat Coiro is normally someone I can trust to deliver. That just didn’t happen here and some of it is on her but a lot of it falls on screenwriters Ryan and Kristin Engle.
Our Grade: C-, As a bit of a romantic comedy junkie and self-proclaimed expert this just wasn’t a good enough effort. In the end it seems like this was a reason for everyone to take a trip to Italy and view some landscapes. Bring back the real romcom please. Not a slight cash-in that never lives up to its billing. A billing that never quite hits the mark. It’s not good enough to be worth the viewing.
