What It Is: Based on the best-selling novel. Tova Sullivan is the nighttime custodian of an aquarium. When the troubled Cameron (Pullman) arrives into town he takes on something of a mentorship with Tova. He’s in town following the death of his mother. Meanwhile the jewel of the aquarium, its octopus Marcellus (Alfred Molina), is seeking a return to the ocean he loved and called home. When truths begin to unravel it’ll change both Tova’s and Cameron’s lives forever.

What We Think: This is such a beautiful and emotionally satisfying film. I’ve not had a chance to read the source material but this made me sort of want to. Sally Field remains one of the most underrated Oscar-winning actresses to ever grace the silver screen. Lewis Pullman is phenomenal as an every man, a trait no doubt inherited from his father Bill. Perhaps the saddest bit the film has to deal with is that it was a streaming only film. There’s a personalization to films in theaters that I feel like this film deserved. To watch this in darkness would be fantastic.

Our Grade: B+, See this. Bring tissues. It’s a beautiful film that tells a story that’s been told many times before, but in a different way. The way this entire thing flips at a certain point makes it so worth the watch. The biggest positive of it being on Netflix is that it’s available to everyone to witness. This will fall under the radar as the year builds but I hope it is remembered positively for what it did. Because what it did it did really well. That said check this film out. I really think it’s worth its weight even if you’ve not read the book it is based on.
