What It Is: Jeremy (Nivola) is super nervy about the relationship between he and his girlfriend Samantha (Lilah Pate). You see she’s now a college first-year student. This distance has Jeremy very jealous. So much so that he’s decided to steal his hapless Driver’s Ed teacher’s (Kumail Nanjiani) car. Now they’re on an unexpected road trip to, in Jeremy’s words, save his relationship. But he and classmates Evie (Telegadis), Aparna (Krishnan) and Yoshi (Aiden Laprete) are about to learn a lot about themselves that perhaps they never knew or were too afraid to uncover.

What We Think: This is very funny and very fun. Bobby Farrelly returns to comedy and unlike his brother seems to understand how to make something solid in the modern cinematic sense. Even if this does feel a little like The Breakfast Club on wheels. Sam Nivola, much like his father, is probably going to be a really strong actor. Here he clearly has comedic timing. Sophie Telegadis is likewise very strong, but for me Kumail Nanjiani steals every scene he’s in, and he’s mostly working against a comedic veteran in Molly Shannon.

Our Grade: B, Color me surprised by this even if the film seems samey with a lot of other options of a similar ilk. Nonetheless I think we need more smaller films like this. Ones that fill a very specific void and work so well. Comedy a lot of times fails to make me laugh. That is not the case here. The jokes hit just right and are funny enough to keep the audience (me) engaged. Not an easy task. It’s nice to see at least one Farrelly brother not completely selling out and trying to make funny things. Check this one out. It is a little film that deserves a lot of attention.
