What It Is: There are operatives, there are elite operatives and then there’s Rachel (Gonzalez) and her crew Bronco (Gyllenhaal) and Sid (Cavill). When you need something done they are who you call. When a ruthless leader (Carlos Bardem) steals over a billion dollars the team is sent in to get it back. By any and all means necessary. You see when Rachel gets the job she makes sure it’s done. She keeps her circle tight and whomever is her target isn’t likely to enjoy themselves.
What We Think: It is certainly a movie. A bloated, overloaded movie. Standard Guy Ritchie stuff at this point. Eiza Gonzalez brings her normal level of sex and charisma to her role and her male lackeys are equal to both. What lets this down is a script that’s too smart for its own good. There’s an M. Night Shyamalan level of twists and stupidity going on here that just wasn’t and isn’t needed. The action set pieces are decent and they are well shot enough to not feel the need to take a Dramamine before watching. Which is a colossal win for action cinema on the whole.
Our Grade: C+, I really don’t know who this is made for that isn’t someone’s dad. The action is dryer than a fart in a desert and the script is scratch paper. You can for sure tell exactly what this film is going to be from the first line of dialogue. Guy Ritchie seems to follow a formula of putting a bunch of the same really famous actors into a film and thinking it’s bound to work again eventually. I can assure you this is not always the case. Sadly this doesn’t soar to the heights some have come to expect from Ritchie. Instead it sputters in a way I personally have come to find from the former action maven.
