What It Is: Jake (Fox) is a young man living on the spectrum. His loving mother Cristina (Birch) isn’t quite sure how to handle it all, but she’s doing her best. When Jake meets the rebellious Alice it’s an absolute shock wave to his entire existence. What comes as a surprise is how much these perceived total opposites have in common. But being young they of course want to explore what could be and what is.
What We Think: There’s nothing wrong with a little romance. Young love gets the center of attention with this one. Fox and Daddario work their awkward chemistry so well. Catharine Daddario proves that charm runs in her family. Her sister is the always charismatic Alexandra Daddario. Lucca Vieira and his cinematographer bring this oddly sunny disposition to the look of the film. It’s a fairly directed little indie flick and one that fans of the romcom will find pretty good. It all wraps up nicely at 87 minutes and that is right about the sweet spot for something like this.
Our Grade: C+, It’s all too small time and unfocused. I think with a bit more solid direction this could’ve truly been something. As it stands this is certainly something to pass the time. I can give you this. The film really fits within its genre and explores subtle themes that don’t really get a second look. It was very nice to see Thora Birch back on my screen. She’s been missed. I’ve not really seen much out of Sean Ryan Fox and I look forward to doing so. Kid’s got a bit of talent in him. I’d like to see what he can do with some more sturdy material.
