Title: Emilia Pérez
MPA Rating: R
Director: Jacques Audiard
Starring: Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez
Runtime: 2 hr 12 mins
What It Is: Rita (Saldaña) is an underappreciated lawyer at her firm. When Mexican drug lord Manitas (Gascón) presents her with an offer she can’t refuse, it sets her life on an entirely new trajectory. Manitas wants to become the woman she has always imagined being, and through Rita’s actions, she begins her transition into Emilia Perez. But for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction—Manitas’ wife, Jessi (Gomez), is now left without her husband and the father of her children. How does one fill that void?
What We Think: What the actual fuck is this? Who is this even for? It’s offensive to Latin Americans, offensive to the trans community, and overall just poorly written. None of the songs are catchy—most of them are downright painful to listen to. Zoe Saldaña deserves so much better than this.
I won’t even get into all the negative press surrounding the film, largely due to its lead actress’s past tweets. But the fact that Jacques Audiard thought he knew enough—or maybe just didn’t care enough—about Mexicans and their culture to properly research anything pisses me off. Selena Gomez really does try to speak Spanish here… but the results are questionable at best.
Our Grade: D+, It doesn’t look cheap. That’s what’s saving this piece of garbage from the crapshoot. Take the controversies out of the equation and just look at the movie that was made. There’s nothing likable here. It’s pretentious, ill-informed nonsense coming from an arrogant director with an apathetic attitude toward the very culture he finds fascinating enough to make a film about. As a musical, there’s no pizzazz to any of this, and it’s all far too rough around the edges musically to work. Don’t watch this. The fact that it has 13 Oscar nominations is a perfect example of toxic liberalism. And this is coming from a VERY liberal person.
