Title: Snow White
MPA Rating: PG
Director: Marc Webb
Starring: Rachel Zegler, Gal Gadot, Andrew Burnap
Runtime: 1 hr 49 mins

What It Is: Disney’s original 1937 feature was the world’s first fully animated feature film. Now, nearly 90 years later, Disney is back to take a second bite of the poison apple—this time with a live-action retelling of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale.

In this version, a young, newly orphaned princess named Snow White (Zegler) must contend with her jealous, evil stepmother, known simply as the Evil Queen (Gadot). With help from seven new little friends and the support of an oppressed village, can Snow White defeat the Evil Queen and reclaim her birthright?

What We Think: What in the blue hell is this film? I went in thinking the IMDb score of 2.0 was harsh and unwarranted. I still think it is—but this is by no means a good film. Rachel Zegler isn’t very good, and Gal Gadot is so much worse. Marc Webb has lost all the luster he gained over a decade ago with (500) Days of Summer.

There’s just really nothing here. None of the cinematic elements are executed well. It looks terrible, the acting is bad, and structurally, it’s completely bankrupt.

Our Grade: F, You know, I really fought with myself over not giving this a failing grade—just to be a contrarian. But this is crap. Sometimes you can watch a film and say, “Hey, it does X, Y, or Z well” (or at least one of them). This doesn’t do anything well.

Why would anyone want to watch this? Little kids aren’t going to enjoy it, and the uncanny nature of the dwarfs is off-putting—even to grown adults. Adults will hate the story, and it won’t hold their attention because it’s so poorly made.

Man, I wanted to give the film the benefit of the doubt—I really did. But it just… doesn’t work.
