Title: Superman
MPA Rating: PG-13
Director: James Gunn
Starring: David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult
Runtime: 2 hrs 9 mins

What It Is: Kal-El was just a child when he crash-landed on Earth from the distant planet Krypton. Now an adult living as mild-mannered Clark Kent, a reporter at the Daily Planet, he hides a secret—he’s Superman (Corenswet). Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive. That identity, and his very existence, comes into question when billionaire tech mogul Lex Luthor (Hoult) decides he wants him gone. But why? What’s his motivation? That’s what Clark and investigative journalist Lois Lane (Brosnahan) will try to uncover.

What We Think: You will believe a man can fly. That magic—that feeling Donner brought to the original—it’s here. It’s modern, but it’s here. James Gunn just gets it. He understands that it’s Clark Kent’s humanity that makes Superman who he is. He also nailed the casting by choosing David Corenswet to don the cape. Nicholas Hoult makes Gene Hackman proud with his take on Lex Luthor. But nothing compares to Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific—he steals the entire show.

This is a long movie, clocking in at over two hours, but it flies by. It’s not Gunn’s strongest directing effort, nor is it perfectly edited. What it is, though, is a breathtaking superhero film with its heart in exactly the right place.

Our Grade: B+, I enjoyed myself way more than I expected. It’s a fantastic film for the whole family—funny, warm, and punk rock as hell. It’s James Gunn at his most “Gunn.” He’s doing whatever he wants with Warner Bros.’ cash cow and a budget to match. My generation had Christopher Reeve. Current and future generations will look to David Corenswet—and, fairly or not, he is Superman now, not Henry Cavill.
