Title: Send Help
MPA Rating: R
Director: Sam Raimi
Starring: Rachel McAdams, Dylan O’Brien, Edyll Ismail
Runtime: 1 hr 53 mins
What It Is: Linda Liddle (McAdams) is an underappreciated and hard worker at her company. She’s been biding her time waiting for that executive spot. When the company’s pompous son Bradley Preston (O’Brien) skips over her in order to promote his college roommate and golf buddy, this adversely affects Linda. Now with a huge contract coming up and none of the work done, Bradley sees this as a way to once again use and manipulate Linda. When their flight crashes on the way to present Linda’s work, a particular set of skills that Linda has honed proves useful. You see, she’s a big time survivalist. She even applied for the reality show Survivor. Now it’s just she and Bradley stuck on this island with no way out…for now.
What We Think: First of all, whoever thought that at any point Rachel McAdams would be anything other than stunning is nuts. That woman is aging like a fine wine and her acting just continues to be top notch. Dylan O’Brien is a delightful little piece of garbage here and that totally works. Looking at the story, it’s a brilliantly written film. Every beat is an unpredictable mystery. The entire time you’re on your toes wondering if what’s in your head will match up to whatever craziness the script has in store. I’m here to let you know my batting average on that was far below the Mendoza line. This is brilliantly written and Raimi is perfect behind the lens for something like this. All his best tendencies are rewarded by scribe and thespian here. The last third of the film might be the craziest shit I’ve seen all year thus far. More of this please! McAdams is so good here, but that frankly comes as no surprise — she’s always up to whatever task comes her way.
Our Grade: A, I’m thinking he’s back! I said to myself as the credits rolled. I’m referring of course to the legendary Sam Raimi, who we need to see more of. Without shackles, of course. Sure he made Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but it was clear Marvel handcuffed him. Before that, Oz the Great and Powerful was once again a giant property where too many hands were touching his work. Not since 2009’s Drag Me to Hell have we gotten raw unfiltered Raimi. I’m so glad he’s back, man! See this immediately! I cannot state this enough. It’s a tremendous work from a damn legend in the game. Thanks Sam, let’s do this again soon, dude!
