Title: The Incomer
MPA Rating: Not Yet Rated
Director: Louis Paxton
Starring: Domhnall Gleeson, Gayle Rankin, Grant O’Rourke
Runtime: 1 hr 42 mins
What It Is: Daniel (Gleeson) is sent to investigate a mostly uninhabited island. I say mostly because its only residents are siblings Isla (Rankin) and Sandy (O’Rourke). Each other are the only people the two siblings have seen since their father left and went “out to sea”. Given this, they are less than trusting of anyone from the outside coming in. Daniel was not prepared for the lengths those siblings will go to to maintain their island, doing so at his own peril.
What We Think: This is a great picture. Its heart is in the right place. Gleeson seems to be having an absolute ball. Rankin and O’Rourke are likewise up to the task here. Through all the silliness and mayhem the film portrays it never betrays its core message that sometimes all you need is family. Whether that’s chosen or blood. This is a hysterically funny film. One of my favorite things about this is the scope of it all. It’s a small film. That doesn’t take away from the fact that the film itself looks great and works even better.
Our Grade: B-, This was definitely a film I didn’t expect to be as good as it was. I sort of went into it thinking it’d be a placeholder but frankly I enjoyed this very much. It’s an entertaining comedy that being honest makes you feel good as a person. A lot of times this sort of thing gets lost in a sea of horror and depression amongst the Sundance fare. See this when it comes out. It’s funny, worth it and may even spark you to be nice to weird strangers who have no understanding of this modern world. Also it’s pretty weird. Like, in the best way.
