TItle: The Snake
MPA Rating: Not Yet Rated
Director: Jenna McMillan
Starring: Susan Kent, Robin Duke, Dan Petronijevic
Runtime: 1 hr 29 mins
What It Is: Jamie (Kent) is the sort of woman many would call a force of nature. Sadly that force of nature is a hurricane. When her mother Anne (Duke) kicks her out of her deceased grandmother’s home, she is trying to prove that the home was left to her and not her mother. She, alongside her loser boyfriend Danger Davey (Petronijevic), are going to attempt to break into the house and find her grandmother’s will to prove she’s the rightful owner. Because why do things the right way, yeah?
What We Think: Susan Kent stars in this and she wrote the film too. This double duty is good. Kent’s writing is really well done. She crafts a simple and fun story. Jamie is a terrible terrible decision maker but the film knows that, it’s aware of the protagonist’s flaws. It uses those flaws as weapons to build the character. At no point do you feel sorry for the character and Jamie never wants you to. She knows the decisions she’s made. I loved talking to Jenna McMillan about her thought process in making this.
Our Grade: C+, I thought this was a good bit of fun. It’s something where you don’t feel bad having watched it and you’ll probably get a couple laughs out of it. That said this is just an okay experience. One that would’ve been better served putting its lead character in positions more beneficial to likability. Nonetheless, if you want to watch a train wreck of a human, which is always a treat, this’ll fill that void! Be sure to check out the aforementioned interview which I’ve tucked in below. I love the weirdness of the films that play SXSW. It just feels right.
