What It Is: Ben Garza (Ramirez) used to be in a band called “The Heights.” They never got off the ground in a way he felt they should. Now he’s a solo act still trying to make it happen. His opener is the up and coming Jessie Ramos (Grace) and she’s at the point where she might actually start to break. Now these two artists, at different points in their careers, are both being given new opportunities following an off the cuff moment they both had.
What We Think: What a lovely film. There’s a difficulty to trying to make a career out of music. It’s clear that everyone involved understood this truth. David Ramirez has been a touring musician for some time. Leslie Grace is an extremely talented actress and singer who got derailed, perceivably, by the cancellation of her Batgirl film. This is the sort of performance and film that’ll hopefully lead to her doing more things. The beauty in this film lay in the cinematography and the script’s most private moments. A song written with love from father to daughter, turned inside out for mass consumption. Another one written out of life’s confusion becomes a duet of longing and living. Ryan Booth has his camera in all the right places. David Ramirez gives a surprisingly nuanced turn, even if it isn’t too much of a stretch. Leslie Grace is beautiful as a character. Her naivety, even if limited, captures us. She doesn’t know what she doesn’t know.
Our Grade: A-, I really loved going on tour with these characters. I loved being told their story. There’s something about the magic of music and when you combine that with the beauty that is the movies it’s a match made in heaven. I’d love for them to release the soundtrack. There are some phenomenal tracks on here from multiple artists in the film. See this! It’s a fantastic experience.
