Title: The Life List
MPA Rating: PG-13
Director: Adam Brooks
Starring: Sofia Carson, Kyle Allen, Connie Britton
Runtime: 2 hrs 3 mins
What It Is: Alex (Carson) has just lost her mother, Elizabeth (Britton). During the reading of the will, everyone assumes the house will be left to Alex. Instead, she’s presented with an unexpected challenge from her late mother. Her inheritance is locked behind a “life list”—a series of tasks her mother wants her to complete. These tasks are designed to push Alex out of her comfort zone and help her build a better life.
She has until New Year’s to finish the list—or she gets nothing. Now, it’s a race to check off every item, including one task that’s going to be extraordinarily difficult.
What We Think: This is an alright film. Netflix operates in quantity over quality—especially at this time of year. Adam Brooks directs, but it could’ve been anyone. He leaves no distinct mark on the film to make it his own. Instead, it’s just a movie—a compilation of scenes stitched together to form a narrative, but without the impactful moments where everything clicks, where you get emotional, where you feel. That’s not really present here. It’s a slight miss on Netflix’s part.
Our Grade: C-,Sophia Carson is clearly trying her best with this—but man, it just ain’t hittin’. Normally, this is the kind of thing that would interest me… but it really didn’t.
Did I know exactly where it was going? I did. Can that be forgiven? Sometimes, yes. But here, the journey just wasn’t interesting or fun enough to justify the predictable destination.
This one’s on Netflix, and even though it didn’t land for me, maybe it’ll work for you. Luckily, it’s easy to find out—just turn on Netflix.
