TItle: The Accountant 2
MPA Rating: R
Director: Gavin O’Connor
Starring: Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal, Cynthis Addai-Robinson
Runtime: 2 hrs 12 mins
What It Is: We return to the world of Christian Wolff (Affleck). This time, he’s drawn into investigating the murder of a Treasury Chief—but only because Agent Marybeth Medina (Addai-Robinson) asks for his help. When the case starts to spiral out of his control, Christian turns to his brother, Braxton (Bernthal), for backup.
But Braxton is a wildcard, and the chaos he brings clashes with the regimented order that Christian not only prefers but needs in order to function at his best.
What We Think: This film is way too long. A lot happens all at once, and it often slips into sensory overload. While watching, I found it hard to focus on any single angle or thread. O’Connor’s direction lacks polish and focus here.
Even in its quieter moments, the film still drags. Those moments are worthwhile, but they come across as jarring and oddly placed. Affleck is fine. Bernthal is charismatic—and fine. Addai-Robinson, however, is stiff, and her character isn’t given nearly enough depth. That shortcoming, I think, falls on screenwriter Bill Dubuque.
I don’t know, man—it just felt like an action film by the numbers.
Our Grade: C+, It’s just really mediocre, man. And it’s way too long—over two hours is ridiculous for a film like this, especially with the breakneck pacing shifts. The result is an inconsistent film that I can’t highly recommend.
That said, it’s an easy one to throw on since it’s streaming on Prime Video. Of course, that doesn’t factor into my grading of its overall quality. I just wanted… I don’t know, maybe a little bit more.
O’Connor did a much better job with the first film in The Accountant series. If you enjoyed that one, you might want to give this a look—but fair warning, the quality just isn’t the same.
