Title: It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley
MPA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Amy Berg
Starring: Jeff Buckley, Mary Guibert, Rebecca Moore
Runtime: 1 hr 46 mins

What It Is: This documentary spotlights musician Jeff Buckley, whose only solo release, Grace, is considered one of the greatest albums ever made. Buckley himself is seen as an iconic voice of the 1990s—known for his ethereal vocals and lyrics that read like poetry. He was a man with an enigmatic personality all his own, whose life ended far too soon at the age of just 30. He left behind not only one record but a musical style that changed music forever.

What We Think: I am now older than Jeff Buckley was when his light went dark—when the beautiful music that once flooded his consciousness stopped. Grace was given but never sought by Buckley. A musician of true talent, a writer of exquisitely crafted verse. All that being said, the portrait Amy Berg paints here—through archival photos and stories shared by those who knew and loved this über-talented musician—is stunning. I can’t lie: I’m a huge fan of Buckley’s Grace and the subsequent B-sides and little-known tracks that came after.

Our Grade: A, I am so impressed by what Amy Berg has done here—with the brushstrokes of a life, she gives us a vivid sense of who Buckley was. You almost feel like you knew him, even just a little. That’s an impressive feat—and, quite frankly, a rare one for music documentaries. I recommend this one highly. It moved my 2025 “cry counter” to three. An easy recommendation for those seeking great documentary filmmaking, fans of Buckley’s music, or anyone who just needs a good cry. Once you finish the doc, I highly recommend giving Grace a listen—it’s truly a phenomenal record.
