Title: Misdirection
MPA Rating: Not Rated
Director: Kevin Lewis
Starring: Frank Grillo, Olga Kurylenko, Oliver Trevana
Runtime: 1 hr 24 mins
What It Is: Thieves Sara (Kurylenko) and Jason (Oliver) are attempting to steal from lawyer David (Grillo). This is definitely the biggest job they have ever taken on. When David returns home earlier than expected, they have to call an audible on the fly. Now they are desperate to escape the house they are essentially trapped in. However, they have no idea what they have gotten themselves into. They do not know the type of man David is, and Jason does not understand why Sara chose David as their mark. As everything unravels, true motivations begin to surface.
What We Think: There is a tension here that I find really well constructed. From the moment the two thieves step foot into the home, you are never quite sure what is about to happen. Kevin Lewis maintains that tension effectively. His earlier work on Willy’s Wonderland showed that he knows how to work within dark, neon aesthetics. I think what he does with the use of windows and mirrors looks great. The script is not particularly strong, but it gets the job done. Where the film really succeeds is in its action sequences when they finally unfold.
Our Grade: C+, I enjoyed this. Is it good? No, not really, but that does not take away from the overall entertaining experience I had with it. It is sort of fun, and the action beats are well put together. The twists and turns make for an intriguing watch, even if none of it feels logical or earned. I think that is where the disconnect was for me. A lot of your enjoyment will depend on your tolerance for bad dialogue, because this film has plenty of it. To be fair, though, it accomplishes what it sets out to do. Have fun, turn your brain off, and try not to cringe at the obvious plot turns and subpar dialogue.
