What It Is: Anne Yum (Awkwafina) leads a very regimented life. She comes home from her job as an account and makes sure to be home promptly in order to watch her favorite show “Can’t Stop the Quiz”. She has never missed an episode and because of this her tightly wound brain is a trivia magnet. When her sister Jenny (Oh) comes back into her life following her mother’s sudden disappearance. She left to vacation with her boyfriend. But what she did leave was massive gambling debts and now her daughters are left to pay that piper.

What We Think: The duo at the core of this are funny and feel like they’re real sisters. That being said I can’t help but feel like the film doesn’t have everything I wanted to see. It’s an easy film. By this I mean it is highly predictable. You know from the jump where this thing is going. You honestly also don’t really care that you know that either. I’m a VERY big fan of Awkwafina. For reference The Farewell is for me, A24’s finest moment. She’s part of that reasoning. Sandra Oh has been great in like, everything she’s ever done. No surprise she breaks her mold and still rocks it here.

Our Grade: B-, This is yet ANOTHER Hulu original comedy that is predictable but still fun and easy to get through. A 90 minute comedy is always going to be something I like. When you couple it with two fantastic leads of color you get another great female lead comedy in a 2023 that was chock full of them. From Joy Ride to Botttoms it has been a hell of a year for funny women to do what they’re good at…be funny. A very enjoyable little comedy. One that will certainly fly under the radar.
