What It Is: Maggie is a 13-year-old girl with a special gift. She just doesn’t know it yet. You see Maggie has synesthesia which makes the world around her far more colorful then so a normal person. For those unfamiliar synesthesia can and does mean a lot of things. For example a condition that makes her see sounds, hear colors and more. As is the case with most 13-year-old girls she begins to experience other things, outside of the synesthesia. The biggest challenge a young girl can face…puberty.
What We Think: I promised Nicola I’d be unbiased in my review and I certainly will be. But I do want to take a moment out to thank her for her tie and allowing us to interview her for this! Her previous film Goodbye, Petrushka is a really fun romantic comedy if you’ve not checked it out. This is an easy 89 minute watch and one the entire family can enjoy. It was a spirited choice for Nicola to put Steven He in this and he’s rather charming in a role unlike one we’ve seen from him before. Shayelin Martin is very good and frankly directing kids isn’t always the easiest thing.
Our Grade: B-, This film is what it is. It’s independently made and is a smaller film. This film is as funny and charming as it can get. Made in Canada it is the type of family centered film they do not make anymore. And when they do it is typically littered with Christian ideology. I’m glad this film exist and I’m glad a space for things like this exist. Nicola, I think you made a solid flick! When you take into account what she’s working with the end product is for me good enough to warrant people check it out! Be sure to take a gander at the interview we did WITH Nicola Rose below!
